Sakura Kikaku Co., Ltd. (Head office: Suginami ward, Tokyo / Representative: Sakura Kitagawa) has created an original web map using VR and AR, selecting 16 carefully selected locations in Minato ward, which is rich in historical sites, with the theme of widely communicating "Japanese spirituality" and "what kind of people the Japanese are" both domestically and internationally.
Minato Ward has an undulating topography made up of plateaus and valleys. People have lived here since ancient times, and shrines and temples built over 1,000 years ago stand here and there, as well as the secondary residences of feudal lords and the first foreign embassies, making it an important part of Japan's historical stage. Many of these are still carefully preserved today.
Sakura Kikaku has carefully selected 16 historic sites and places of interest within this area where you can particularly feel the “lives, thoughts, and feelings of people from ancient times.
They created an original map that combines VR, an immersive experience that makes you feel as if you've been warped to a specific location, with AR, a feeling that something is about to pop up in your room.
The 360-degree VR allows you to admire the intricate craftsmanship of temples and shrines, as well as the surrounding scenery and atmosphere. Meanwhile, AR brings "something special" unique to each historic site leaping out right before your eyes.
It also includes historical explanations for each era, as well as historical trivia that won't appear in guidebooks and will make you nod in agreement.
All pages are available in both English and Japanese.
Supervised by Masaya Hasegawa (aka "History guy MASAYA"), a former diplomat who has also lived in Minato ward.
An "unveiling event" will also be held, where visitors can actually tour the famous places introduced on the VR+AR map with the fun guide of history guy MASAYA.
The tour will cover 16 locations in several sessions, including famous spots that were not included on the map, allowing you to experience Minato Ward firsthand. The first event will be held on February 22, 2026, and many people will participate.
